Table 1 specifies the numeric keys used as keyboard shortcuts on this site, and their corresponding functions. Voici les touches numériques qui sont utilisées comme raccourcis clavier sur ce site et leurs fonctions.
What are Access Keys
Access keys — * refer to note re:spelling — are keys on the keyboard that are designated as keyboard shortcuts by web page authors. Access keys enable site navigation via the keyboard, without using a mouse or touchpad. Keyboard shortcuts are preferred by many “power users” for speed, as well as for accessibility.
Almost any key on the keyboard may be used as an access key, although numeric access keys reduce the potential for overlapping definitions of browser and assistive technologies’ shortcut keys.
[top]How to Use Access Keys
Quick Tip:
If your browser does not support access keys, try using the Tab key to move from link to link on the page.
In order to be able to use access keys, or keyboard shortcuts, on a website the following are required: (1.) access keys must be defined for that website by its author(s); and (2.) the browser (or other device) used to visit the website must support access keys.
The key designated as an access key for a particular section of the website is pressed in combination with either the Alt key (Win) or the Ctrl key (Mac OS®), depending on the OS being used.
[top]Using browsers on Windows®:
Without an assistive device:
- To select a link: Simultaneously press the Alt key and the corresponding access key (refer to table 1) for the desired link. [Example: Press 'Alt' and '9' to select the 'Contact' link.]
- To follow the selected link: Press the Enter key.
- To move to (and select) the next link on the page: Press the Tab key.
With JAWS™ Screenreader (version 10):
- To select a link: Simultaneously press the Alt key, the Shift key, and the corresponding access key (refer to table 1) for the desired link. [Example: Press 'Alt' and 'Shift' and '1' to select the 'Home' link.]
- To follow the selected link: Press the Enter key.
Using browsers on Mac OS®:
Press the Ctrl key (instead of the Alt key, as for Windows® browsers) and the desired access key. [Example: Press 'Ctrl' and '3' to select the 'Site Map' link. Then press 'Return' to follow the link to the site map.]

* Author's note: Although the term ‘access key’ is spelled as one word, it has been separated into two words on this website to try to help make screenreaders' pronunciation of it understandable.
